Professor Ian Barr appointed Editor-in-Chief of ISRV journal

The International Society for Respiratory Viruses (ISRV) is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Ian Barr as the new Editor-in-Chief of Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, the society’s official journal

Professor Ian Barr has been appointed the new Editor-in-Chief

“I’m honoured to take on the role of Editor-in-Chief of Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses. The journal plays an important role in advancing scientific knowledge and collaboration in this critical field. I look forward to working with the publisher (Wiley), the editorial team and contributors to continue building on its reputation for excellence and relevance in global public health,” said Professor Barr.

Barr brings more than thirty five years of experience and a distinguished record of leadership. He serves as Deputy Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza at the Doherty Institute in Melbourne, where he has worked since 2000 and held his current position since 2005.

His career has spanned research and development across vaccine science, mucosal immunology, adjuvants, cancer therapeutics, immune system development and diagnostics. His contributions in academic and industry settings have played a significant part in advancing global understanding of respiratory virus biology and control. He also holds an honorary position at the University of Melbourne, supporting continued collaboration in public health research.

Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses serves as the official journal of ISRV and provides a vital platform for high quality research across influenza, RSV, HMPV and other respiratory pathogens. Support from ISRV members remains central to the journal’s ongoing success. Under Professor Barr’s stewardship, it will continue to play a key role in sharing new knowledge and strengthening the global scientific community working in this area.

Professor Barr will assume the role of Editor in Chief on 1 January 2026. He succeeds Professor Ben Cowling, whose eight year tenure has been marked by significant growth and strengthened international standing for the journal. ISRV offers sincere appreciation to Professor Cowling for his leadership and dedication.

Maria Zambon, ISRV Chair, said: “The society looks forward to welcoming Professor Barr into the role and working with him as the journal enters a new phase of scientific leadership and impact, and I would also like to thank Professor Ben Cowling for his outstanding service.”
