Nancy Cox was a brilliant scientist, mentor and leader whose influence shaped not only the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), but also the wider international respiratory virus community. Over a distinguished 37-year career at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), she led the Influenza Branch and later the Influenza Division, making lasting contributions to influenza surveillance, vaccine strain selection, antiviral resistance monitoring and pandemic preparedness.

Maria Zambon, Chair of ISRV, said: “Nancy Cox’s contribution to global influenza research and public health was extraordinary. As a founder of ISRV, she helped establish a community grounded in collaboration and scientific excellence. She was a trusted mentor and an inspiration to many, and her legacy will continue to shape our field for years to come.”

Beyond her scientific achievements, Nancy was known for her generosity, integrity and unwavering commitment to collaboration. She supported and inspired countless colleagues around the world, many of whom continue to build on the foundations she helped establish.

As one of ISRV’s founders, Nancy played a pivotal role in shaping the Society’s mission and ethos. Her vision of a connected, collaborative global community dedicated to advancing respiratory virus research remains central to ISRV’s work today.

Nancy passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones. She will be greatly missed by colleagues and friends across the world.

ISRV extends its sincere condolences to Nancy’s family, friends and all those in the global public health community who had the privilege of working with her.

Her legacy will endure through the many lives she touched and the vital work she helped to advance.
