20-year celebrations: name change, governance update, and a fresh look

As ISIRV celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025, the Society is embracing change to reflect its growth and future direction. To mark the occasion, an anniversary lecture, “Use of antivirals in pandemics: what have we learnt?”, will be given at ESWI 2025 in October.

Founded in 2005 as the International Society for Influenza and other Respiratory Virus Diseases (ISIRV), the organisation has evolved significantly in scope and influence. In 2024, members voted to rename the Society the International Society for Respiratory Viruses (ISRV)—a move that recognises the growing significance of viruses like SARS and RSV alongside influenza. The new name reflects a more inclusive focus and aims to better represent the full spectrum of respiratory virus research. The new name and visual identity will be unveiled in May/June 2025, alongside the launch of the Society’s redesigned website. The Society’s journal, Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, will retain its name to preserve its impact factor.

At the same time, members also approved updates to the Society’s Articles of Association. Administrative changes are intended to promote diversity, regional representation, and fresh perspectives, and include new term limits for Council members.

As ISIRV enters its third decade, these updates signal a refreshed commitment to advancing the science of respiratory viruses worldwide. Stay tuned for more announcements throughout the anniversary year.
