A Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital, Professor Englund has dedicated her career to improving the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other respiratory infections. Her research has advanced vaccines for children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised patients, while also evaluating antiviral therapies and vaccine effectiveness through large community and hospital surveillance studies.
One of her most significant contributions has been the development and assessment of new strategies to protect infants against RSV through passive monoclonal antibodies and maternal immunisation. These interventions are now widely used in the United States and have contributed to an almost 70% reduction in RSV-related hospitalisations among infants, demonstrating the real-world impact of translational research.
